How to Eat Healthy on a Budget Audra Lowe: When you go to the supermarket do you find yourself stocking up on plenty unhealthy foods that just seem to end up in the trash. Well if so, you're not alone. I think this magazine nutrition editor Sara Wells is here to share some ways to shop smarter, eat better and spend less. Good to have you back. A lot of people are having a tough time shopping smarter right? Sara Wells: It’s true, it’s tricky there's so many products in the grocery store if you're in a rush just want to get in and out. You should always make the smarter choices. Audra Lowe: What are the first tips that you have as a plan ahead and that’s the tough part? Sara Wells: That’s is really key and it is hard but what we really want to do is want to sit down, you want to determine what you're going to be making that week, what ingredients you need and then go with the list. If you have a list you're more likely to stick to it without a list, you're more likely to make impromptu purchases which may not be so healthy and can also add up. Audra Lowe: You’ll add in all the desserts. Also you say shop for season. How do you do that without spending from time to time? Do you have to do a lot of research to figure this out or is it just what's up? Sara Wells: You know I mean most of the time it is going to be what's out there. You can also a really quick Google search to find out what's in season in your area. There’s plenty of websites that would tell you that. And really check labels and compare labels. Audra Lowe: There's a -- on top here in the magazine it says you have to veg out kind of swap things out month for the other. Sara Wells: Yeah I mean even if just say one week you decide to go vegetarian you’ll save 25% on your grocery bill. Audra Lowe: And very quickly before you go, cut back on the coupon. You're not trying to buy it. Sara Wells: The coupon might make you think oh I'm saving money I’ll buy those M&Ms but you know. Audra Lowe: Thank you very much Sara and if you want to get more great tips to help save you money at the supermarket you can pick up fitness magazine or you can just always go to their website, fitnessmagazine.com.
