Amy E: We're here in San Jose at Scandalous Saloon and it's all decorated for Halloween. We're going go in and we're going to do a Longhair Layered cut. And we're going to learn some blow drying techniques from Franc. Follow me. They are very into Halloween here. So let's go see what's it all about? Sir, do you like your haircut? He had the worst haircut he has ever had in his whole life and he is not happy, in fact he is angry. I know. Bring me my crown. Well, it was nice meeting you. Oh! There is Franc, let's go visit him. Okay, so you're combing her through and what you're doing? Franc: Basically I'm just detailing her hair, and what I want to do is I want to just clean it, take clean sections and just start with my sectioning. Past the ears here, the hair likes to flow forward. So I normally tend to part there. So I work on my back section first and then I'm going to over direct and bring everything back towards me. So what I am going to do is I'm going to go ahead and cut, sort of cutting here. I'm going to take about two to three inches off here rings here. Amy E: So did you cut straight across? Franc: What I did is I just cut straight across, but as I get down to the top layers, I'd like to do a lot of point cutting. It's creating texture on the end so it just actually eliminates some of the weight. So I'm pretty mush done with the back. And I'm going to go over to the sides here. What I'm doing this here is just kind of one once establishing my length and just kind of going around the whole entire, the head and just taking it up toward where I want to be. Then I'm going to start my layering. Okay, so what I've done is I've already pretty got until the length that I want to be. I'm going to start creating my layers. I'm going to start with my back section here. And then work my way around the head. I don't normally tend to work from left to right, that's just my technique. It gives me a little bit more balance. And then towards the middle or even the end of this cut, I loose myself and I get into this crazy texturizing mode, I start taking weight and just we start seeing the heaviness is in the hair and where it's not flowing correctly. That comes toward the end when I'm going to try that. Amy E: So you'll be able to foundation by going left to right in a very stroke shoot manner and then in the end you're going to get to be able to be more creative in free style what this is. Franc: Correct. It's basically up to you in training your eye and seeing the weight and really taking it to the next level which we're going to do once we get the foundation of the simple Long Layered cut. So when I point cut it, I point cut into the hair and I'm creating different length as you can see as well as some texture. So I'm just going to start using my section that I just cut as my guide and I'm going to move around the head. So I am just taking a small section using my previous guide and I'm just following it through and continuously point cutting. Amy E: So when you're done all of this, what's the next step? Franc: What I'm going to do is I'm going to over direct the hair and I'm going to do this horse shoe shape parting and I'm going to over direct the hair forward. I kind of cross check my layers and start taking a little bit more weight off the front and then I'm going to bring everything from the back to the front, so we can over direct the hair, take more weight off in the crown to get more height. But what I'm going to do right now is I'm going to work the fringe. I'm going to establish my length there as well and use that as a guide. Amy E: How do you know where to start the fringe? Franc: Well, I'm just going to take it where the round of her head is. So definitely establish more or less - l mean, like I said, in hair styling there is rule, there is no rules at all. You can be so avant-garde, you can be very disconnected, you can do whatever. Amy E: Experiment. Franc: Totally. This is just - it's a basic layer which is a tad bit more textured. I'm just taking off a little more of her weight. But I know a stylist long time ago who taught me.
