Hi, I am David Epstein this is growing wisdom, a place where we help you with some of your garden tips and hints, and helps. We try to really help you around the yard both inside and outside through out the year. Today we are going to talk about hostas and how to divide them. Many of you know hostas get really big and need dividing every few years. The ideal time to do it is really early in the spring or very, very late in the fall. So, here we are early in the spring and you will notice some of the new growth beginning to come up those little cones. And, this is the time when I want to dig this up and transplant it. So in order to do that we need a proper shovel, we will dig it up, we will split it and we replant it. So, let us get to work. All right, so in order to divide the plant, you got to dig it out right? You want to choose the correct shovels. If I use the pointed shovel, I am going to be digging into the roots. I want to dig around the roots and lift the hosta up and then we are going to cut it in half. So, we are going to use this shovel. So, what you want to do is you want to do dig a nice hole around the hosta, and you are trying to get this come out as one big clump. You kind of want to jiggle things back and fort until you can really get the shovel underneath the ripple. You are trying to lift this ripple up so you can get all the roots. The more roots you get, the better chance you are going to have them this plant is going to survive, there you go. There is very nice ripple of hosta. What I like to do is take a little handsaw and I like to literally just cut right through the plant. What we have done is we basically now have two nice clumps of hosta. When you replant this or when you plant the other piece in a new hole be sure that you keep the level of the hosta the same as it was when it was originally in the ground. You do not want it any deeper, and you surely do not want it any higher up. So, I put it back in the hole and give this a quick little drink here and then what we are going to do is we are just going to use some soil. We are going to mix this in. You want to be sure whenever you plant anything that it is packed in nice and tight, so we have gotten two hostas for the price of one in just a few years.
