Hi, I'm Janet Kennedy. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist and sleep specialist in New York City. You can find out more about me and my work on my website, nycsleepdoctor.com. Bedtime routines are important for babies because it teaches them what to expect when its time for bed. The elements of the routine form a progression and they help the babies body to relax and get ready to sleep. The elements themselves aren't as important as the consistency. So you can pick things that you like or that your baby responds to as long as you do them consistently each night in approximately the same order your baby will catch on. Think of the bedtime routine as a one way street to sleep and try not to let it get derailed. Bring everything you need into the babies room from the start and don't get distracted if somebody happens to get home from work at the wrong time. Make sure that if you do arrive in the middle of the routine you're joining it where it is instead of starting a play time because babies get very excited by those kind of set shifts and its difficult to get back on track. People like to do things for routines like using white noise, using music, reading books, singing songs or just snuggling. Again it doesn't really matter what you do as long as you're creating a routine that your child likes and that you can sustain day to day.
