How to Choose a Christmas Tree A Sheila Bridges Holiday Designer’s Notebook So you want a real tree this Christmas here’s what you need to know. First know how large a tree your room can handle. Then consider if you want softer prickly needles. Douglas Fir has the softest needles. Balsam and Blue Spruce have sturdier needles. The heavier the ornaments you’re hanging the stronger the branches needles need to be. Once you get your tree home, saw a fresh inch off the bottom of the tree to prevent dried sap from blocking water intake, keep your tree hydrated, use warm water, especially when it’s first cut to open up the trunk to take in more water and always keep the base filled. Don’t put your tree near a heat source like a radiator if you have no choice be sure to turn off the radiator near the tree when your tree does finally dry out instead of tossing it out with the garbage try recycling it as much for your flower beds or shrubs.
