Hi everybody! I'm Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. Fetal heart rate monitoring is one of the most important parts of prenatal care. By monitoring your baby's heart beat, you and your practitioner can ensure that your baby is in good health. What's really exciting is that you can monitor your baby's heartbeat in your home with a machine called a fetal doppler. It's a small, hand-held device that picks up sound waves from your baby's heart and amplifies it in the form of a heartbeat. Now fetal dopplers are perfectly safe but when you are buying one make sure that it's FDA-approved. Now although ultrasounds are safe for baby, you don't want to over do it and take any chances. So make sure to stick to no more than two or three exams for 10 minutes each week.
