Male: This is my job is to hold the horse while Lincoln is going to get the treats. You want some treats? Would you like a carrot? Would you like to learn how to change the disk brakes on your car? Male: So today we are going to eat apples. Female: Because the trees were— Male: We are going to eat apples and we are going to talk about kind of part one of drift irrigation and how to fix the pump in your pump house and we are going to eat some—he has got a big mouth and some other interesting stuff. So ready? Here we go. So, in our backyard we have a spring and the spring used to provide all the water for the house and the yard and then recently I drilled a well so now we use the spring to water the garden and I have an automatic watering system that does drip irrigation for the garden. We had a big Easter last week and the pump house is filled with water because there is just so much rain coming in the pump houses, half submerged in the ground. And, our pump here basically blew out. I took off the service panel here and it could have been a little aquarium in here. There were so much water so this pump is right but I have a spare one here and we are going to put in. And, I do not know if you have ever placed a pump, a water pump or a well pump but it is not a fun job. So if you have done one then you can have some sympathy with me. This is the spring and it has kind of basically like a concrete system built on top of the spring with a metal shed roof that keep out the debris and stuff and the dogs love the spring. This is the tub that the spring overflows into and it is Henry’s tub. This is the pump house. We need to put the pump in that hole. I am putting the pump in the pump house and the dogs are obsessed about the ball and they keep on throwing the ball into the pump house. Meanwhile, we are here, I have got to reconfigure the pipes and it is wet, and it was kind of cold, they want this. Would you like this? Okay we are in the pump house and I got to pump in. You cannot really see it there. It is kind of dark. Now we have to prime the pump. All right so there you go, we have success with our spring. The pump is pumping up into the pressure tank up in the basement of the house. Now, we have to go to turn on the rest of the system and see what happens. So in the fall, you have to remember to drain all your outdoor waterlines and I want to show you now what happens when you forget to drain your outdoor waterlines. All right, so back to the water system, so now that we have the spring fixed, I built a copper manifold that I have a bunch of these rain timers connecting to. Anyway, these are made by Rain Bird. You can get them made by other companies as well. I like this because they are incredibly simple. Some of them have these really kind of confusing panels. You have got to press these sorts of buttons to make it work. But this is really pretty simple. I am upside down or I am sideways right now. Female: Yes, I guess this is going to supposed to happen, okay. Male: Okay, so we have these timers. I made this copper manifold here with a hose three quarter inch, post threads on the ends, and these timers by the way—we want to make sure you will have a filter screen at the top of the timer. Female: Why? Male: Because we pull from the spring and there could be some debris in the water and you know frogs, and you want to keep the grit out of your drip and meter system. We are just going to do the soaker hoses today. The dirt got in here so we just clean it out. Female: The frog? Male: The frog. Okay, this goes here. Female: This goes here. Male: While this hose goes here, you do some simple programming here like I am going to just put out some seedlings so I want this to water them every morning. You do not want to run your watering system in the evening because you do not want water to collect on the leaves and then for it to get dark because then the humidity where the fungus can grow. You want any water to get some of the leaves to be able to evaporate during the day. So watering in the morning is best. Fem
