How the Two Types of Lactose Intolerance Differ Sean: My name is Sean. I’m from Mount Olive New Jersey. I’ve heard that there are different types of lactose intolerance. What are the symptoms and how do I know which one I have? Satish Rao: Sean there are two broad types of lactose intolerance. We have congenital lactose intolerance that is your bond with the inability to produce lactose enzyme in your small bowel from childhood or that is acquired lactose intolerance which is either because you lose the enzyme as you get older or you have a disease such as acute gastroenteritis or cilia disease which leads to a loss of this ability to produce this enzyme and digest lactose products. The way you know this is if you are intolerant from childhood than it is from childhood or after a disease process then you have may transitive lactose intolerance or you may need testing to prove that there is no other cause for your lactose intolerance.
