How the Asian Flu and Common Flu Differ Dale: Hi I'm Dale from Washington D.C. Living at San Diego. I want to know, what the difference between the Asian and any other flu? Erica Brownfield: Well Dale, the Asian flu also known as the bird flu is a viral infection that is seen in birds. We don’t typically see it in humans. The human virus—the influenza virus is transmitted from person to person. The bird flu is usually passed from bird to bird. Not common but it can be passed to humans if humans are exposed to excretions or secretions of the birds. It can cause symptoms ranging from viral-like symptoms of the common flu that adults get but can also cause death. Scientists are a little bit worried about the bird flu because all flu viruses have the ability to mutate and change and we are worried that possibly the bird flu may change to the point where humans maybe able transmit it from person to person—but right now, very unlikely.
