Greg: I am Greg from Atlanta, Georgia and my question is how many hours of sleep do my children need to be prepared for the next day at school? Tim Hoban: Well Greg, there are rough estimates of sleep needs for school age children. So for example most younger school age kids up to age 12 need 10 or 11 hours of sleep at night and most teenagers need 9 or 10 hours of sleep at night but there is a quick way that you might be able to ask to me the amount of sleep that your child does best time, that’s to go back to last summer time and look at a stretch where your child was falling asleep whenever they wanted and sleeping into whenever they wanted. And if they were doing at their best at that time that’s often the proper amount of sleep during summer time kids who often gravitate toward the proper amount of sleep that they need and then you can see that as an estimate as to what to aim for the school year.
