Kelly: My name is Kelly Flinters and I’m from Gardena. My question is, if a child has chickenpox, how long should they stay unschooled? DR, Kimberly Giuliano: That’s an excellent question Kelly. A lot parents will ask that because we just don’t see chickenpox as much as we used, thanks to the chicken pox vaccine. Chickenpox is caused by a virus called varicella. And the varicella virus is transmitted by raspatory droplets that a patience breaths in or it’s transmitted by direct contact with the person who has the disease. The lesions for chickenpox are contagious until they form a scab or over them so a child may safely go back to school without transmitting the virus to other children once all the lesions are completely crusted over.
