How Effective Is a Hand Sanitizer Karina: Hi, I’m Karina from Largo, Florida. I was wondering is hand sanitizer as effective as hand washing. Dr. Michael Schmidt: Thank you for that question Karina. That’s a very interesting one that many of us struggle with when we enter public restrooms and we see good old soap and water and we see this new fangled apparatus on the wall that has this hand sanitizer or alcohol gel. The short answer to your question is, yes indeed they are just as good. And the reason hand sanitizers have gained popularity is you don’t need a sink, soap and water in order to use them. They can be easily transported in your pocket or purse so at any moment, you can take it out and sanitize your hands and be ready to eat that meal safely knowing that your hands are clean and you’re not going to be transmitting microbes to yourself, to your family or friends.
