How Different Types of Acne Can Be Treated Jon: Hi, my name is Jon Morgan, I am from Amelia Island. And my daughter has pretty bad acne, how do I get rid of it? Dr. Timothy Patton: Well John, there are multiple therapies that exists for acne. Most cases of mild to moderate acne can be treated with topical medications. These topical medications include those over the counter and prescription strength products. In most cases, a combination of these products which include creams, gels, washes, lotions and peels can be successfully used in treating to mild to moderate cases. For more severe cases, there are systemic therapies. I think most dermatologist would agree that first line systemic therapies include the tetracycline group of antibiotics. For females, there are actually other therapies such as birth control medications and a medication called ‘spironolactum’. These medications are directed at treating the hormonal causes of acne and in certain cases can be very effective as well. For acne that does not respond to these previously mentioned therapies, there is a medication called isotretinoin. And isotretinoin is very effective at acne. It does need to be prescribed under physician supervision or other health care provider because of potential adverse effects which can occur.
