How Autism Severity Can Be Assessed The prognosis of autism is very variable and as variable as there are people in the world. That’s one of the difficulties; we don’t know right now exactly how to tell a parent. When we see a child at 18 months or two years, what that child is going to look like at seven or eight years. That’s one of the great mysteries and one of the major areas of research. We need to be able to understand the different kinds of autism that exist and how they relate to what we call trajectory or how somebody is going to do and progress and what treatments are most effective for the different types of children.
