How Asthma Can Be Treated Thank you Diego for sharing your story with us I think it is a remarkably similar to many other people who have asthma. We know that asthma is an inflammatory condition of the airways. In Diego’s case he describes a number of different triggers for his asthma. Typically triggers involve things that they are in the environment. Now it could be things in your home such as dust or if there are animals in your home like cats or dogs. It can be things like rags or carpets in your environment. Some kinds of triggers though have nothing to do with the environment and are more related to things like exercise and in exercise there is lot of cold and dry air typically because your moving air in and out through your mouth rapidly and that can set off the asthma attack as well. The best way to prevent in an asthma attack is really to pay attention to your symptoms as Diego described he had a number of different medications and he knew when to use the different medications. Asthma medications generally fall into to categories. There are those medicines to which we term relievers which means they are meant to help your symptoms right away that is very important. Those are medicines which act quickly and can be typically can be inhaled very easily. The other classes of medication that we tend to use now for asthma are either inhaled or oral medications that are anti-inflammatory. We saw Diego playing basketball and saying he used so much better than he was. He were able to run almost everyday like he wanted to and I think that is a key. When we think about Asthma we think about helping people do what they want to do. That is one of the most important things for you to talk to your doctor about and say I want to do this and I need your help to make my Asthma better.
