How Alcoholism Is Inherited to Children Glenn: Hi, I'm Glen from Buffalo, New York and my question is, is alcoholism hereditary and what can I do to prevent my teenager drinking? Shannon Croft: Glenn, alcoholism is hereditary which means that you know it runs in the families. The childhood alcoholic parents is at high risk of developing alcoholism but it’s important that you know that it doesn’t mean that you're child will develop alcoholism. This that you and they do will decrease their risk. One of those is having frank discussions about alcohol the dangers of underage alcohol use and been used. Another important thing is as a parent if you keep tabs on your child as a teenager knowing the friends they hang out with, where they are and what they're doing it is less likely that they’ll be in a position to experiment with underage alcohol used.
