Home Improvement Options to Sell Your Home Real Questions Amy: Hi my name is Amy I’m 35 years old and I live in Ferndale, Michigan. I own my own home at the Colonial in the suburb of Detroit. I’ve got many updates including a new roof, new spinal siding a new patio, fence, 23 new windows. I’m not in a rush to sell but what are the most important things to consider when preparing my home as a for-sale-by-owner? Paul Puryear: The first thing I would suggest Amy is you’ve talked about making some improvements to your home but they’ve all been exterior. Think about the interior because the female buyer. The wife for a couple is going to make is going to carry a big sway in making the decision so think about the kitchen. Think about all the interior things that she has to deal with when you’re thinking about improvements. The second thing I would suggest to you is to make your home as neutral as possible, neutral colors repaint if necessary. We want your home to appeal to the broadest possible buying segment so think about anything you can do to broaden the appeal and the third thing I would tell you is that trying to sell your home, yourself right now is probably an uphill fight. There’s an awfully lot of inventory out there more than we have seen a couple of decades. Now this may change but you’re competing with some very good professional real estate brokers so if you’re going to get out there and try to sell it yourself learn what its like to be a broker. Do all the things that professional broker would do and especially learn the market place and the price points.
