Josh: I am Josh from Old Town, Maine, and I want to know, does high cholesterol have an effect on contracting diabetes? Mimi Ghosh: This is a great question, Josh, because it brings up a lot of very important points. The risk factors for high cholesterol are also the risk factors for high blood pressure and diabetes. People that are overweight, obese, smoke or inactive or have bad family histories are at risk of high cholesterol and diabetes. People who have high cholesterol and diabetes are also at risk for heart disease and stroke. Therefore, these are all connected. Do whatever you can to minimize your risk factors and make sure you know your family history so that you and your physician can come up with a good plan for your health.
