Jay fires up three Google applications found on Android phones, and explains what they're all about, including Google Translate, Google SkyMap and Google Goggles.

Hi I’m Jay Goldman. You are watching this mobile on butterscotch.com. Today we’re going to take a look at three Google Android applications that come from Google so you might call them Google Android Applications. We’re going to take a look at three other apps available on any Android device in the Google marketplace. So, you can grab them if you got an Android device. If you do not, you can sort of use them in other place in other place in the Google Empire but they’re really much better on Android so, I’ll recommend that you get your cell phone Android devices if you want to play with them. The first app is a very simple application called Translate. Now you can obviously do this on the web at translate.google.com. You can just type in text or put that on web page, pick a language and we will translate it for you. What’s the thing about doing it on this phone is it actually does text to speech. So there’s a little microphone icon in the text field right up here. We’ll just type on that. My name is Jay and this is mister mobile. And it goes up to the server, does a translation up there since the textbox down on the phone, and badly translates this to, my name is Jake and this Miss. So this is not perfect. But if you say things that are pretty common, if you give address, this is actually does not pretty work job with. It will actually just go and translate that for you directly. Now there’s whole bunch of language that is in here. There are some way ones that are missing. Somebody asked me to demonstrate translating the Hebrew and Hebrew does not appear to be in here but you could do lot of things like for example English to Spanish or English to French or Spanish to French. You do not have to start with English. And the cool thing about most of those languages is that will actually read it back off way. Now you can obviously imagine the uses of this if you’re traveling. You do not how to say something looks language. You can do the translation on here and then actually have a read that back out to people. The voices pretty computerized. I played around with this on a couple of native language because in language that I did not speak and they have al little bit of trouble understanding it. But on the whole, this is kind a like holding the future in your hand. You can basically say words into it one language and it will read them back in another language almost intensely. So, is everyone where going to take a look at this called Google Sky Map. I kind a like this one because I’ve been a big fan of sorting a line back in the field that night we’re looking up with the stars and picking up the constellations. The promise I usually have no idea what I’m looking at. Google Sky Map changes that by using combination of the GPS and directionality of this phone so it knows which way it facing. So that it understands exactly what you’re looking at and so what it does is locate in a route, figure out what you’re looking at, and then show you on the screen what the constellations are. So you can kind a move this thing around and you can see exactly what constellation your pointing the phone app right now. You can turn on and off a bunch of layers if you go to the menu here so you can travel night mode, you can jump into settings and you can sort of turn on you know stars constellation things I do not about like messiah objects. You can activate planets, have horizon length. All that kind stuff. You can also search if you’re looking for particular thing in they sky; you can do a search directly on them. This going to be a tan of funny, if you got kids and you want to take them out night, and do some star watching or star gazing, take this with you and you could actually identify the things that they’re looking at. So that is Google Sky Map and again that is available in the marketplace store. The last one we’re going to take a look out is Google Goggles. Now Goggles came up with kinds of jokes around this one. This came out around the name a Goggles, probably my favorite was a Simpson’s weapons if you’re Simpson then you know exactly what I’m talking about. The way Goggles works is it takes advantage of the camera on the phone to let you take pictures of things. And there’s a very sophisticated announces on that picture, and tells you what it is. So let’s say for example, you were in a foreign city that you did not know your maybe on a trip and you’re looking at the building, and you want to know what it was. The promise of Google Goggle is that you can punch your Android phone on it, hit the button. It will analyze that picture and will come back and tell you’ll exactly what building you’re looking at. That is pretty awesome but this works of the whole bunch of the other stuff as well. So for example, if we take a CD like this CD right here and I just point the phone on it with Goggles open, and I get a good picture of the cover. It will then do an analysis on it. You can see this kind a blue line that goes across as its doing kind of scan of it. It’s very sort of futuristic lasers scanning kind a thing. And then it goes up to the Google server and it says what is this picture off. So there you go and recognize in products just base on the photograph. Also does not pretty decent job of things that have a bar code on them so there’s a bar code on this right here. I could do the same thing and take a picture of it and it will come back, and tell me where I’m looking at this on the bar code. And it will actually give me the option to compare prizes using Google’s prize comparison service so I can see whether the thing I’m holding are particulars stores of dealing one. So there’s lot of things you can take pictures open Goggles. You check out Google’s website about Goggles and will include a link to that in the show notes on butterscoitch.com. It got a great little video up there that kind a explain it and tells you some of the things you cannot take pictures out. And some of the things you cannot update the picture off. This is obviously working progress and it want to be enhancing the algorithm so that it’s better of recognizing lots of different things.
