Susan: Hi! I am Susan from Buffalo, New York and I'd like to know if there are any medical benefits for the breastfed baby as opposed to formula-fed? Dr. Joe Gigante: Yeah, Susan, human breast milk is the absolute best food that you can give your newborn infant. There are lots of different medical benefits that are related to breastfeeding. Probably, most importantly is that children who are breastfed have much fewer infection. So common infections that we see in children like ear infections, colds, pneumonia, urinary tract infections are much less common in kids who breastfed as opposed to kids who formula-fed. There have also been some studies that suggest that kids who breastfed, infants who breastfed are much less likely to die from SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome than kids who formula-fed.
