Kate: I am Kate from Auburn, Alabama and I am 26. I would like to know what are the benefits of having a flu shot. Dr. Randell Wexler: Kate, the importance of getting influenza shot every year is that 40,000-50,000 Americans die every year from influenza, which is a completely preventable disease. The elderly and the young are much more susceptible, but it’s important for everybody to be immunized, so they do not pass it on to somebody else. Although there are certain myths out there with regards to the vaccine causing influenza, that’s not true and you may have a side effect of a sore injection site or feeling achy, but it does not cause the flu itself.
