Firefighters Give Free Haircuts To Low-Income Kids - as part of the news series by GeoBeats. Firefighters are among the beloved heroes of our country. Some of them recently gave a local community one more reason to appreciate their service. Getting kids back to school means additional expenses and since not everyone can afford them, Fairfax County firemen came in to help. On Monday, August 27th, off-duty firefighters and barbers joined forces at the local recreational center and provided free haircuts to kids that are on free or reduced lunch plans. One of the firemen, Derrick Penny was once a barber and states, “We wanted to do something, come to a neighborhood where if we didn't show up, they might not have a new haircut for school.” More than 100 kids received haircuts for free and on August 30th the fire department plans to give away free backpacks. Earlier this month, West Virginia firemen warmed the hearts of local residents in South Charleston. The fire department filled their trucks with teddy bears. The goal is to hand deliver them to children who have experienced traumatic events.
