E Ink and LG color e-paper screens debut in Japan Martin Williams: The first electronic paper displays that can show color were unveiled on Wednesday in Japan. The screens open the way for eBook reader is like Amazon’s Kindel and Sony’s Wii to add color but so far only a single Chinese Device maker has committed to using the technology. E Ink a leader in the paper market showed this 9.7 inch screen that could display 4,096 colors. Like all new paper screens there’s no lights source inside the display. It uses reflected ambient light to make it visible and for this reason the colors appear a little dull when compared to a backlit screens like those in laptops or flat panel TVs. Sriram Peruvemba: These are based on our same electrophoretic technology which has been pretty successful in the Monochrome space. We now have the color display and we’re aiming at newer markets like electronic textbooks for example as with less advertisement in News Papers and a few other application that require color. Martin: The first product feature the screen will be this eReader from China’s hand wiring technology. Scheduled to go on sale next year in China and some overseas markets it will cost around $535. LG Electronics had two models of colored ePaper display what was a 9.7 inch screen with similar specifications to eInk screen and the other was this combo display. The majority of the screen is a monochrome 3 paper display but a strip along the bottom of this color. LG didn’t say when either of its screens will go on sale.
