BRAZIL'S NATIONAL TEAM PRACTISING STORY: With a few of his regular players injured, the coach of Brazil's national soccer squad, Felipe Scolari, named Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, Atletico-MG goalie Victor and defender Dede of Cruzeiro to the team on Thursday (September 26). After a long stretch of sub-par outings, Brazil's national team finally redeemed itself when it beat reigning World Cup champion Spain in the finals of the Confederations Cup last June. The Confederations Cup tournament, which Brazil also hosted, was considered an important warm-up to the World Cup. Brazil remains the only nation to win the World Cup five times and Scolari said it was important for all the players to be confident about their chances to win the upcoming World Cup. "If I say to you that we are not going to be champions, what am I saying to the Brazilian people? We have to say to them (Brazilian people) that we are going to be champions and that we have what it takes to be champions. Who is called up and selected (to the national team) and does not think that way isn't doing anything for us," Scolari said. Scolari is currently getting his roster ready for two upcoming friendlies in Asia. Brazil, which will host the 2014 World Cup, is scheduled to face South Korea on October 12 in Seoul and then Zambia in Beijing, China on October 15. The new edition to Scolari's team which drew the most attention on Thursday was Leiva who will fill the gap created by the absence of veteran goal-scoring threat Fred. Atletico-MG goalie Victor and defender Dede will fill the gaps left by the absence of long-time starting goalie Julio Cesar and defender Thiago Silva. This is not the first time that Victor and Dede have had the opportunity to play for the national team. Recent fixtures of the team and star players such as Neymar, Paulinho, and David Luiz will once again will be relied upon to lead their country's team. Neymar, who is by far considered Brazil's major superstar, recently began playing alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona Scolari said he believes that despite the fact that his star player has perhaps been playing more than he should, Neymar is showing that he is one of the best soccer players in the world. "He (Neymar) has played a lot more for the team (Barcelona) than what is good for him. It's interesting and good. It's an evolution for Neymar and I think that the arrival of Neymar in Barcelona has given a lot more power to Barcelona than they had before. We all once wanted Neymar to become one of the better players in the world when he played in Brazil and now, today we have the situation where he is showing he is one of the best in the world by playing with Barcelona," he said. Brazil's squad has continued to look strong since winning the Confederations Cup. Despite a close loss to Switzerland, Brazil went on to beat both Australia and Portugal handily.
