DHCP Reservations Tutorial Hello, I'm Charles with Dependable Computer Guys. I'm one of their senior network engineers and from time to time when you set up a new device on your network you need to give it a DHCP reservation. This is the procedure on how to do it. For our experiment here, I'm going to be setting up and HP Laser Jet 2300 in. I already know its IP address and I already know its MAC address. I found this over at the Utilities like IP Scan and DOS and ARP command, APR-A. So from your Windows 2003 server you're going to need to enter the DHCP Service, given the computer management go to a DHCP under your scope and reservations. This is what we’re going to be doing on work under reservations inside of DHCP. To reserve your reservation you’ll need to right click on reservations and you'll need to right click on reservations and go to new reservation. On the Reservation name you can type anything you’d like, pretty much this name will change as you mess around in DNS but that’s for another story. For now I'm going to give DHCP reservation name of HP 2300. I'm going to throw on the end of that our domain.dcla.local and for the IP address I already know what to do, when I do that 168.1.40, so I’ll put the IP address in and then the last line to complete your DHCP reservation will be in the Mac Address. I'm just going to copy and paste that in, since I already know in advance. You can give a description if you desire to have some sort of reference later. In case that reservation name changes. To complete your process hit Add and that will add that entry to you DHCP reservation list. So for your printer to now use that DHCP reservation, if it hasn’t been set yet you should go over to your printer, turn it off and then turn it back on again and if it’s using DHCP to get its IP address that IP will be assigned to it from your DHCP Server. Right click it. Now to get into the properties of your DHCP reservations it's pretty hard to do, it doesn’t happen instantaneously. It's like half of the time you'll get a connection to the properties of your HP or the device that you're trying to go to properties. You'll highlight reservations, highlight your actual item on the left side of your screen and then you could right click you'll see properties at the bottom. And then you can go back and edit. In case your MAC address changes, if you get a new print server serving your printer. You can always go back and change the Mac address and edit your DHCP reservation and change it that way. Now to see if this worked you’d want to go into your address list and here I'm going to highlight address list and adjust my screen so I could see. You can go about sorting, sorting it by the unique Mac address by the name of the product, the device that you're looking for and even by the IP address. So to summarize use DHCP reservations to guarantee your IP Address as typed to your devices, so if you have any questions regarding this or any other networking issues just give me a call at Dependable Computer Guys.
