Colombian officials were watching the Nevado del Ruiz volcano closely on Sunday (April 8) after the volcano, which lies 129 kilometres (80 miles) west of Bogota, spewed smoke and ashes. Since March 31, when officials declared an orange alert in the nearby area because of increased volcanic activity, gas emissions have reached 3,000 metres and sulphur emissions have continued. Vulcanologists have said the 5,364-metre (17,598 foot) high Andes-mountain range volcano has been unstable.
