Child Safety - Is Your Child Buckled Properly Chris Hansen: Child safety seats, well, many parents are doing a better job than their parents’ did when it comes to securing their ids while driving, research from the National Highway Traffic safety Administration still finds that nearly three out of four seats are not being used properly. Auto makers like General Motors have engineers dedicated to child safety. Julie Kleinert: Two of the most common mistakes in installing car seats are not attaching the child seat tightly to the vehicle and not adjusting the harness tightly enough. Chris Hansen: This week is child passenger safety week and safe kids U.S.A. along with more than 300 of their coalition members are conducting car seat checkup events. Wes Bender: One of the things that can confuse parents is that there are various types of car seats out there and obviously different ages and weights of kids and getting that right combination is rally important to the parent. When families arrive at this event with their car and their children, they’ll be met by certified safety seat technicians. They’ll weigh and measure the child. They’ll inspect the seat, make sure it's free of recalls and they’ll educate the parents and caregivers on the proper technique for installing that seat into the vehicle as wells as securing the child into that seat. Julie Kleinert: National Child Passenger Safety Week is an annual campaign to help raise the awareness of parents and caregivers to the importance of properly restraining all children and vehicles on every ride. Chris Hansen: The General Motors foundation has partnered with Safe Kids U.S.A. since 1997. In that time, nearly 1.3 million car seats have been checked and the program has also provided more than 457,000 child seats to families in need.
