George: My name is George and I am from Newburg and I am wondering how I can get my child to participate more in class? Vanessa Jensen: Well George, it depends on part on why she is not participating, or why he is hesitant to get involved. If it's a certain situation, a particular teacher or a subject, I would ask the teacher and your child about what's going on and provide a lot of reassurance and encouragement. If he or she is just a pretty shy child, and it's been going on for a while, think about using some resources, think about the teacher, they are often really good at knowing how to pull in that child who is a little hesitant to help pick a situation where he or she will be successful and get the right answer. So talk to the child's teacher, talk to others who know your child well and then do some role play with your child, practice the idea of how to raise your hand, wait for the teacher and how to speak loud and clear and just provide lots and lots of reassurance.
