DOCTORS IN BELGIUM WANT TO HELP REDUCE PART OF THE STRESS.THEY CLAIM A NEW IN VITRO FERTILIZATION METHOD CUTS COSTS FROM THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO ABOUT $265. THEY ARE TESTING A SIMPLIFIED TREATMENT USING FEWER DRUGS TO STIMULATE EGG PRODUCTION, REQUIRING LESS TO BE DONE IN AN EXPENSIVE LABORATORY. (SOT: Professor Geeta Nargund, medical director, Create Health Clinic & lead consultant, Reproductive Medicine services, St George's Hospital)"When you look at the cost of IVF where is the cost? The cost is in drugs, the cost is in the laboratory and then of course, if complications happen, the cost of treating complications and the cost of treating multiple pregnancies."WITHIN MONTHS OF STARTING FERTILITY TREATMENTS, LEE COWDEN SUFFERED A MAJOR HEART ATTACK DUE TO A BLOOD CLOT. SHE SAYS THE MANY IVF DRUGS SHE'D TAKEN WERE TO BLAME. (SOT: Lee Cowden, former patient at Create Health)"The nurses actually said to my family that they needed to prepare me for what was actually the bigger thing for me was that I wasn't going to be able to have a family."AFTER SURGERY, SHE SOUGHT HELP FROM THE CREATE HEALTH CLINIC AND BECAME PREGNANT WITH HER FIRST DAUGHTER, MOLLIE. SHE LATER HAD RUBY WITHOUT IVF TREATMENTS. NARGUND BELIEVES THAT DOCTORS IN REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH NEED TO REEVALUATE THEIR TECHNIQUES. (SOT: Professor Geeta Nargund, medical director, Create Health Clinic & lead consultant, Reproductive Medicine services, St George's Hospital)"IVF is here to stay. More and more women, more and more couples are going to need IVF in the future."EXPERTS BELIEVE THIS CHEAPER IVF COULD BE SUITABLE FOR ABOUT HALF OF ALL PATIENTS NEEDING TREATMENT. SOME PATIENTS, LIKE OLDER WOMEN NEEDING HIGH DRUG DOSES TO STIMULATE EGG PRODUCTION AND MEN WITH SEVERE SPERM PROBLEMS, WILL STILL NEED REGULAR IVF. JILL CRAIG/Associated Press
