The Fontana Unified School District is arming its school police with some new high-caliber rifles. The district bought 14 Colt rifles valued at $1,000 each. They were purchased before the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn., but officials say they hope they’ll prevent any future tragedies. The school district’s police chief says his officers have undergone extensive training. He also says the military-style rifles are to be kept safe, and only used in extreme emergency cases.
