Sarah: Hi my name is Sarah and I'm from Strasburg Colorado and I had a question I have heard that antibiotics can harm the digestion and that probiotics can help that is that true? Lisa Corbin: Hi Sarah, you are absolutely right antibiotics can harm the digestive system and probiotics can help it. The way it works is probiotics are the normal bacteria that are normally found in your colon the so called good bacteria. What happens is when you take an antibiotic for an infection it kills not only the bugs that's causing the infection but it also kills those good bacteria in your colon so by taking up probiotic supplement you can replace the bacteria that the antibiotic is killing by accident and help prevent some of those unwanted side-effects like diarrhea. Probiotics are widely available you can find then in a lot of health food stores and they are very safe.
