[Notes:SOT]Auret Fan Heerden, President/CEO Fair Labor Association: (NB: Soundbite partially overlaid with shots of factory workers)"We're asking factories to make significant investments to produce a more ethical product. We've all got to be ready to share that cost."IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH, FLA AUDITORS VISITED THREE FOXCONN COMPLEXES AND EXAMINED A YEARS' WORTH OF PAYROLL AND TIME RECORDS AT EACH FACTORY.THE FLA CONDUCTED INTERVIEWS WITH SOME WORKERS AND HAD 35,000 FILL OUT ANONYMOUS SURVEYS.Geoffrey Crothall, Spokesman of China Labour Bulletin:"very often they are forced to work excessively long hours and in very intense working environments." DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE LABOR PRACTICES VIOLATE CHINEASE LAW, THE FLA FOUND THAT MOST WORKERS WANT TO WORK EVEN MORE OVERTIME.Geoffrey Crothall, Spokesman of China Labour Bulletin:"the problem is the workers are never consulted about what they want, and I think that's the key issue that Foxconn has to resolve if workers' right are really going to improve."APPLE ITSELF COMMISSIONED THE FLA TO PRODUCE THE AUDIT, A MOVE THAT HAS DRAWN CRITICISM FROM LABOR UNIONS. THE FLA FOUND FEW SAFETY VIOLATIONS, AND NOTED THAT FOXCONN HAS TAKEN STEPZ TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF ALUMINUM DUST IN THE AIR. THAT CONDITION CAUSES AN EXPLOSION AT THE FACTORY LAST YEAR, KILLING FOUR WORKERS.
