Known for classic films such as Lawrence of Arabia, veteran British actor Peter O'Toole has announced his retirement from the stage and screen. After a career spanning 50 years, the 79-year-old said it was time for him to "chuck in the sponge". Adding that "The heart for it has gone out of me" and it "It won't come back". During his working life, O'Toole received eight Academy Award nominations, and in 2003 was awarded with an honorary Oscar. Immortalised forever in the heart of Hollywood, last year he was honored with a hand and foot print ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. O'Toole ended the statement by bidding the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell. He plans to spend time now working on the third volume of his memoirs. Sarah Mills, Reuters
