For three decades, Barbara Terry has been a prostitute in an industrial area of the Bronx. She says she survived only because quote “God was with [her]” … Here’s a clip from an exclusive New York Times profile... “Barbara Terry is 52 years old and says she has worked as a prostitute for 30 years at Hunts Point.” “Barbara says her chosen profession has gotten her arrested more than 100 times. But it has also enabled her to support and raise four children and send two of them through college and pay for a family house upstate.” But in the Bronx, prostitution’s not a safe job. The blog, Feminist Law Professors, puts the story into perspective... “It’s difficult to know what to make of [the story]. … On the one hand, the profile appears to imply, ‘Hey, being a street prostitute isn’t so bad!’ ... On the other hand, [the New York Times writer] observes that Ms. Terry no longer has all of her teeth ... and reminds readers of a series of sexual assaults and rapes of Bronx prostitutes last year...” A writer for the blog The Root says, it’s a fascinating story -- and he’s surprised she’s managed to keep herself safe on “the track”. “It’s pretty amazing that she’s made it this far in streets where her friends have been beaten up, gone missing and even ended up dead.”
